Leaving a Legacy on the OTM Trail Project 2022-23
On the 14th of April 2022, Aberdeen based golf company Bonnie Wee Golf in partnership with VisitScotland launched the innovative “Old Tom Morris Trail” which allows golfers to retrace the steps of the game of golf’s most iconic figure, Old Tom Morris.
Born in a humble weaver’s cottage in St Andrews in 1821, the foundations of Old Tom’s legacy support the four key pillars that we, as a nation, must encourage the next generation of children to aspire to.
Old Tom Morris was a Confident Individual, a Successful Learner, a Responsible Citizen, and an Effective Contributor to the developing society in which our children live today. What Old Tom Morris achieved both in life and golf would inspire anyone.
Thanks to funding generated at the recent Aberdeen Golf Links ProAm gala dinner a unique opportunity has arisen for Learn From Their Legacy and Bonnie Wee Golf to work in partnership with Scotland’s educators to leave a lasting legacy at locations touched by Old Tom’s genius on the “Old Tom Morris Trail”
Together we will deliver an innovative education project befitting the ‘Grand Old Man of Golf “providing the platform for the next generation of children from Cullen to Crail, Dornoch to Dunbar & Moray to Machrihanish to learn from his enduring legacy. As the Custodians of Golf, we owe Old Tom Morris that.
What will be provided at participating Primary Schools
• All Programmes will be delivered by LFTL creator W Lumsden (9.00am-3.00pm).
• Four activity learning booklets providing children with group problem-solving tasks.
• Recognising achievement certificates and wristbands for all participating children.
What will children learn from the legacy of Old Tom Morris?
Educate – Personal Development
Working in collaboration with the class teachers we will place all pupils within a group environment enhancing their confidence, social interaction, communication, & teamwork skills.
We will provide each individual group with
their own ‘Grand Old Man of Golf’ Activity
Learning booklet which will provide them with fun, literacy, & numeracy problemsolving tasks to complete. This enhances
their critical thinking, leadership skills, and promotes positive attitudes.
Educate – Golfing Heritage
We attach problem-solving tasks and life-learning chapters that defined Old Tom’s legacy to fun interactive, golf activities helping to improve pupils’ mental health & physical wellbeing.
• Growing up in St Andrews (1821-1851)
• The Keeper of the Green at Prestwick (1851-1864)
• An Open Championship legacy (1860 -1895)
• The Custodian of the links at St Andrews (1865 -1903)
• The ‘Grand Old Man of Golf’ (1821-1908)
Empower – Life Skills and Social Values
Individual group chats will discuss and identify the main life-skills which the pupils perceive Old Tom Morris used to shape his legacy. This helps to create a raised awareness of the general importance of life-skills and how they have a positive impact on shaping futures.
Inspire – Positive Growth Mindset
Class chats will discuss the key principles of a Growth Mindset which, like Old Tom Morris, all pioneers have. We will inspire the children to believe that they too can achieve like Old Tom.
